Eliza Edmunds Hewitt (1851–1920), a Philadelphia schoolteacher and Sunday-school worker, wrote “When We All Get to Heaven” in 1898, and Emily D. Wilson composed the tune. The hymn looks forward to the heavenly city described in Revelation 21, with its pearly gates and streets of gold. Its refrain, “What a day of rejoicing that will be!”, has made it a favourite at funerals and at services about hope.
