James Milton Black (1856–1938), a Methodist layman and Sunday-school teacher in Pennsylvania, wrote the words and music of “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder” in 1893. The usual account says he wrote it after a girl in his Sunday-school class, absent when he called the roll, died, and he thought of how he would answer on the day the roll of the saved is called. The “trumpet of the Lord” and the gathering of “the dead in Christ” come from 1 Thessalonians 4:16.
