Frederick Martin Lehman (1868–1953), a German-born American pastor, wrote the words and music of “The Love of God” in 1917, in California. By his own account the third stanza, “Could we with ink the ocean fill”, was not his: he said it was a couplet from an old Jewish poem that he had heard quoted, and he built the first two stanzas and the chorus around it. The poem is generally taken to be the Aramaic Akdamut of Meir ben Isaac Nehorai (eleventh century). The hymn rests on Ephesians 3:18–19, “the breadth, and length, and depth, and height… the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge”.
