“Go Down, Moses” is an African American spiritual built on the story of the Exodus: God’s command to Moses, “Let my people go”, in Exodus 5:1 and 8:1, becomes the cry of enslaved people for freedom. Its first printing was a sheet-music edition, “O! Let My People Go: The Song of the Contrabands”, published in 1861, and the Fisk Jubilee Singers made it widely known in the 1870s. There is no single fixed text, and the number of stanzas varies between collections.
