About “The Holly and the Ivy” ·

“The Holly and the Ivy” is a traditional English carol with no known author. The earliest printed versions are broadsides from the early nineteenth century, and the melody usually sung was published by Cecil Sharp in English Folk-Carols (1911), after he collected it from a singer in Gloucestershire. In the carol the holly stands for Christ: its white blossom for Mary’s purity, its red berry for his blood, its prickle for the crown of thorns and its bitter bark for the gall.
