“Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence” is Gerard Moultrie’s 1864 English version of a Greek chant from the ancient Liturgy of St James, sung at the bringing of the bread and wine at communion. Moultrie (1829–1885) was an English Anglican priest. The hymn is sung to PICARDY, a French folk melody arranged for the English Hymnal of 1906 by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Its opening echoes Habakkuk 2:20, “let all the earth keep silence before him”.
