Henry van Dyke (1852–1933), a Presbyterian minister and Princeton professor, wrote “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” in 1907 while visiting Williams College in Massachusetts. The usual account says he handed the poem to the college president the next morning, saying it was to be sung to Beethoven’s “Hymn to Joy”. The tune is the theme of the choral finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (1824), arranged as a hymn tune by Edward Hodges in 1846. The last stanza recalls Job 38:7, “the morning stars sang together”.
