“Good King Wenceslas” was written by John Mason Neale (1818–1866) in 1853 for his collection Carols for Christmas-tide, made with Thomas Helmore. The words are Neale’s own, and the melody comes from the spring carol “Tempus adest floridum” in the Finnish collection Piae Cantiones (1582). The story is about Wenceslas I, Duke of Bohemia (about 907–935), remembered for his charity and later made a saint; he was a duke, and the title of king was granted to him after his death. The Feast of Stephen is 26 December.
