“There Is a Balm in Gilead” is an African American spiritual. Its refrain answers the prophet Jeremiah’s question in Jeremiah 8:22, “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there?”: Gilead, east of the Jordan, was known for a healing resin, and the spiritual says that there is such a balm, “to heal the sin-sick soul”. The text and tune appear in print in Folk Songs of the American Negro (1907), and the stanzas move from discouragement to encouragement to witness.
