“Holy God, We Praise Thy Name” is Clarence A. Walworth’s English version, made in 1853, of the German hymn “Großer Gott, wir loben dich”, a free paraphrase of the Te Deum attributed to Ignaz Franz (1719–1790), dating from about 1770. Walworth was an American Catholic priest. The tune GROSSER GOTT comes from a Catholic hymnal printed in Vienna about 1774, and the hymn is widely sung by Catholics and Protestants alike.
