《Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht》是《平安夜》的德文原诗。神父约瑟夫·莫尔1816年写于马里亚普法尔，乡村教师兼管风琴手弗朗茨·格鲁伯为1818年平安夜萨尔茨堡附近奥伯恩多夫圣尼古拉教堂的礼拜谱了曲，用吉他伴奏首次演唱。莫尔的原诗共六节，本页是德语里最常唱的三节。大家熟悉的英文词是约翰·弗里曼·扬1859年的译文。
“Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht” is the German original of “Silent Night”. The priest Joseph Mohr wrote the poem in 1816 in Mariapfarr, and Franz Xaver Gruber, a village schoolmaster and organist, composed the melody for the Christmas Eve service of 1818 in the church of St Nicholas in Oberndorf near Salzburg, where it was first sung with guitar. Mohr’s poem has six stanzas; the three given here are the ones most often sung in German. The English words most people know are John Freeman Young’s translation of 1859.
