๐ Historical Background
Hava Nagila ("Let us rejoice" in Hebrew) is one of the most recognised Jewish folk songs in the world. It was composed in 1918 by Abraham Zvi Idelsohn, drawing on a melody from the Bukovina Hasidic dynasty. The lyrics were later added by Moshe Nathanson. It became internationally famous through recordings by Harry Belafonte in 1958 and has since been performed in virtually every musical style and on every instrument imaginable.

๐ฌ Musical Structure
Hava Nagila is written in the Freygish scale (Hijaz maqam) โ a minor scale with a raised 2nd degree that gives it its distinctive Middle Eastern flavour. In 4/4 time, the piece typically begins slowly and builds to a frenetic, driving climax. The melody moves through two distinct phrases: the lyrical verse and the rapid "Heveinu" refrain. This banjo arrangement captures the melodic essence in a clean, accessible format ideal for beginners.
๐ต Banjo Performance Tips
- Start at a slow, even tempo โ the characteristic scales require precise left-hand position and clean right-hand articulation. The correct tempo will emerge naturally as you grow comfortable with the notes.
- The Freygish mode (A minor with Bโญ and raised 6th) is unusual for banjo. Pay particular attention to the Bโญ โ it gives the melody its distinctive Middle Eastern flavour. Do not accidentally play Bโฎ.
- When you are comfortable with the melody, begin to gradually increase the tempo on each repetition. Traditional Hava Nagila performances accelerate dramatically toward the end โ this is the essential energy of the piece.
